ძირითადი მიღება

  • Survey covered 18 Russian regions, 2021-2024
  • PVY present everywhere, only as recombinants
  • PVM and PVS frequently co-occur; PLRV in two regions
  • Mixed infections in half of all samples
  • Genomes feeding RNA-interference protection work

რატომ არის მნიშვნელოვანი

ფერმერებისთვის
Recombinant PVY and mixed infections mean seed health checks calibrated to older strain profiles may miss what is actually in the field.
მომწოდებლებისთვის
Geographic mapping of strains gives seed producers a basis for targeted monitoring rather than blanket certification.

A genetic survey of potato viruses across 18 Russian regions found that potato virus Y, the most destructive of them, is not only ubiquitous but present exclusively as recombinant variants that had been underestimated. Researchers from the Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry (IBCh RAS) and collaborators used next-generation sequencing on RNA from leaves and tubers collected between 2021 and 2024. Alongside PVY, M-virus (PVM) and S-virus (PVS) frequently co-occur, and leafroll virus (PLRV) was detected in two regions. Mixed infections were found in half of all samples, with PVY and PVM together accounting for about a third of cases. Viral disease can cut yields by 50% or more, and Russia produces roughly 30 million tonnes annually, so the practical weight is considerable. The decoded full-genome sequences are already being applied to biological protection based on RNA-interference technology, which suppresses viral RNA in plants.

A sweeping genetic survey of potato viruses across 18 Russian regions has revealed an alarming reality: the most destructive pathogen – potato virus Y (PVY) – is not only ubiquitous but has also evolved into recombinant forms that were previously underestimated. Researchers from the Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry (IBCh RAS) and their collaborators used next-generation sequencing to analyze RNA from leaves and tubers collected between 2021 and 2024. Their findings show that PVY dominates every sampled area exclusively through recombinant variants, while M-virus (PVM) and S-virus (PVS) frequently co-occur. In two regions, they also detected the leafroll virus (PLRV). More strikingly, mixed infections were found in half of all samples, with PVY and PVM together accounting for about one-third of cases – a complex epidemiological landscape that had not been fully appreciated before.
